cctychGalionLive! has learned of a situation in Bucyrus concerning the fate of the fountains in front of the Crawford County Courthouse. Apparently, one of the two fountains was completely removed, and the other was in the process of removal, when the County Commissioners were contacted by representatives from the Bucyrus Preservation Society. The following news release was received today from that organization:

“The Bucyrus Preservation Society has been given permission by the Crawford County Commissioners to manage the restoration of the remaining courthouse fountain and castings. The fountains and elaborate castings are thought to be over 100 years old and an integral component of the Courthouse restoration in 1908.

Due to reported deterioration, the county commissioners early this month removed the west fountain and planned to fill the east fountain with top soil. According to preservation society president, David Pirnstill, the society asked the commissioners to halt their plans until the society could put together a restoration effort, unfortunately the west fountain had already been removed. “It is our belief that the fountains are a very important aesthetic component of the Courthouse. With the Courthouse being a contributing building in the Bucyrus Historic District, we believe that the citizens of our county would be in favor of an effort toward restoration”, stated Pirnstill.

The elaborate fountain castings have been sandblasted and primed for repair. The next step will be to dismantle, have new pieces molded, repairs made, and the castings painted. The concrete fountains will need cleaned, concrete repaired, re-plumbed, and the concrete sealed.

The Preservation Society is asking for help form the community through volunteerism or donations of materials or labor. if anyone is interested in being involved with the restoration effort they can contact Dave Pirnstill, Jim Croneis, or any society member.”

GalionLive! is in touch with members of the Bucyrus Preservation Society, and would be glad to funnel information, offers of support and/or donations to them. Contact GalionLive! at: galionlive@gmail.com

I was shocked when I read this. I thought there was one ELECTED offical within County Government that would have not have been in favor of something historically connected to the Court House dismantled and removed.
Best of luck to the folks saving a piece of history.
