From time to time, GalionLive! takes a moment to share postings about Galion or Galionites which have appeared in blogs and social media.

    Less interesting than Bucyrus? Really?

ginb2Although the post is 4 years old, we just discovered this entry where the “Ohio County Project”  profiled Crawford County in its ongoing description of travels to the county seats of Ohio. In a post entitled “Crawford County: The Way it Was,” the author begins to describe our county in this fashion:

“Crawford County is one of those quiet counties that people will drive through, and outside of butchering the pronunciation of Bucyrus, they won’t even know they passed through it. Which is quite a shame as the county is rich in heritage and tradition – and corn and bean fields.”

One assumes that he/she was referring to soybean fields. In either case, the author describes Galion in this fashion:

“Downtown Galion has a lot of charm that is very similar to a lot of the old towns across Ohio. The community has a quaint charm that makes it feel like Silvertown from Joe Dirt. Get away from downtown and Galion becomes a typical small town, and the south side has a nice stretch along 98, but the majority of the community is struggling.”

Curious as State Route 98 does not go through our fair city – quite likely the reference was to Portland Way South/Route 598. Quizically, however, the author also states that “Downtown Bucyrus is even more interesting than Galion.” PLEASE! Other than two murals, one begs to differ.

Joe Dirt was filmed in Santa Paula, California, by the way — click here for a view of their downtown. Not much similarity to Galion, we would say.

    Great Gun!

ginb3If you have ever noticed the mounted cannon near the entrance of Galion’s Amman Reservoir, and wondered about its story – wonder no more. The “Historical Marker Database,” relays that the cannon is one of the original set from the famed frigate U.S.S. Constitution, also known as “Old Ironsides.”

Local Business Profiled in Online Publication

ginb1The online publication floorcoveringnews.com recently profiled My Floors by Prints and Paints, located at 888 Bucyrus Road in Galion.

In specific, the article focused on Prints and Paints’ “Focus on Design 2009” seminar, which drew 250 area residents and business people to the store this past March. An art show held in conjunction with the event showcased creations made by Galion students using recyclable materials.
