youth1Take teenagers, combine history and a good dose of “fun,” and what do you get?

If you guessed, “trouble,” you might be right in some communities. If you’re in Galion, however, there’s a positive answer to that question – you would get the Galion Historical Society Youth Board, the newest activity for young people in our community. Established earlier this summer by the regular Society Board, the Society Youth Board was formed in an attempt to get Galion’s young adults involved in their community by helping to preserve its history.

According to its Facebook Page, the group has an aim “…to promote awareness and concern for historic landmarks in Galion while also educating teenagers about the history of their hometown.” Each month, the Youth Board takes its own turn at the conference table in the Koppe-Skinner House, and over chips, cookies, pizza and pop (necessary requirements for such events), it considers projects to undertake to support the Society’s activities. Current discussions have included ways to assist the Society in implementing its first-ever Car Show on September 25 as well as on “Brownellaween,” the annual Halloween night at Brownella. The group has also been discussing possible community old movie nights and other projects.

The Youth Board has already elected its first slate of officers, and to date, eleven current and former Galion High School students have participated. They are always looking for additional members – so if you are or know a teenager who might be interested, please visit the Galion Historical Society Youth Board Facebook Page by clicking here.

Great idea guys! You will be the leaders in the community that you choose in 20 years! And you will be needed, and appreciated because you have gotten involved so young!
