The deadline for candidate registration for the November 2009 election has now passed, and apparently the recent public outcry concerning the possible increase in utility rates has contributed to the largest number of candidates running for Galion City Council in recent memory. A full slate will also be presented to voters in the Galion City School District.
Four City Council seats are being contested in November – those of Council President Richard Swain (elected at-large), as well as At-Large Councilwoman Roberta Wade, 2nd Ward Councilman Walter Keib, and 4th Ward Councilwoman Cathy George. According to the Bucyrus Telegaph-Forum, the races will apparently involve a total of 10 candidates, including 6 running for 2 at-large seats. The 2nd Ward race will be unconstested, and the 4th Ward race will involve 3 candidates — including two current members, Cathy George and Roberta Wade. For candidate names and addresses, click here.
Two seats on the Board of Education for Galion City Schools are being decided in November, those of current members George McElligot and Carl Stough. McElligot will be running for an additional term, and three additional candidates are on the ballot.
GalionLive will follow the election closely over the coming weeks. As always, this site will remain open for an free an unencumbered exchange of ideas and viewpoints. At some point we will also be sending out a questionnaire for candidates, asking them for details on specific issues important to the community and the district. If anyone has a question they wish posed to either slate, please send it to: galionlive@gmail.com.
