• M.O.M.S. Formed, Seeks Pictures of GHS Alums in the Military

A group has been formed locally to give female relatives of servicemen and servicewomen the opportunity to come together for sharing, support and discussion. In turn, the group is now looking to Galionites across the country for assistance with an important new project.

According to group founder Nancy Green, the idea for M.O.M.S. – Mothers of Military Servicemen/women — came to be when she realized that four staff persons with Galion City Schools would have sons deployed at the same time. The group has now expanded to include nine women, and meetings have been transferred from the GHS Media Center to Varsity Grille on the second Tuesday of each month. These nine women now include a wife and girlfriend of soldiers in the field.

“My opinion was that the only people who could understand exactly what we are going through is someone who is doing the same thing!,” Nancy recently shared.

The group has undertaken a project with the support of GHS Principal Fritz Caudle involving the creation of a display area in the cafetorium with pictures of GHS graduates currently serving in the US military. This would include not only those deployed, but also those active in the Guard or Reserves, or otherwise employed with the military. With this project in mind, M.O.M.S. is seeking 5 x 7 pictures of Galion graduates together with their name, rank, and branch of service. The picture need not depict the person in full uniform, but it is asked that the photo be in military wear and/or on duty.

If you have a photo and information, please send them to Nancy Green at: 5792 State Route 19, Galion. She is also willing to arrange for photo pick-up, and can be reached via telephone at (419) 468-3296. She is also available to answer questions about the group and its purpose.

I applaud the efforts of Mrs. Green towards this end. When I served in the active duty military (specifically the United States Navy), the toughest job in the Navy was that of the Navy spouse and not that of the actual military member. Early in life, especially with (possibly young…) children involved, the job of a military member’s spouse cannot and must not be overlooked. I never looked forward to going overseas for extended periods of time, only because of the hardships that my deployment placed on my family (my wife and my two kids), but it was my job and, after all, it IS an all-volunteer military.

While serving our great country is, indeed, a very honorable thing to do; being “there” for spouses of those serving in the military is never easy.

      Best of luck, Nancy!

As a soldier facing my second upcoming deployment in 3 years, this is an awesome idea! Galion really needs something like this to help folks remember the importance of support for our service members & their families’. Our nation’s overseas involvement is nearing a decade in length & all too often in this culture of media saturation our memories & attitudes can become dim & indifferent. It becomes very clear when the fallout of missing our mobilized loved ones hits home & we feel motivated never let them be forgoten through great ideas like this one. Despite how we feel politically about what’s going on over there, we must stand by & support our service personnel who continue to make it possible to be the “land of the free, & the home of the brave”. By the grace of God, we will all continue to support plans to encourage service members & their families’ just like this one….

      THANKS AGAIN M.O.M.S.-
May your efforts for this project truly be blessed,
