Good news for Ohio from Washington, D.C. today in turn brought good news to the Galion City School District.
As reported by many sources, Ohio was named today as a winner in the “Race to the Top” school reform grant funding contest. This program, now in its second round, is a component of the giant federal stimulus package passed in 2009. Many of the states competing for the monies changed teacher accountability regulations in order to become competitive for the funding; local districts, including Galion, were required to get the approval of teachers’ unions to apply.
Ohio will now receive some $400 million which, according to this story in today’s Columbus Dispatch, will be targeted in “…closing the achievement gap between white and minority students, evaluating teachers in part by student performance, and turning around low-performing schools.
Not all local districts made application for the monies, however Galion City Schools did. As such, it stands to benefit to the tune of $282,072.58 according to figures provided by the Ohio Department of Education. Galion is the only school district in Crawford County to receive funding. Other local districts and amounts to be received include: Marion City ($969,100.32), Mansfield Madison ($354,070.91), Mount Gilead ($134,269.98), Lexington ($119,473.32) and Shelby ($156,610.81). Also receiving funding will be the Treca Digital Academy in Marion.
