GalionLive is pleased to shared another in our continuing look at “Galion Places” — buildings, streets, landscapes, and other features of our community that contribute to Galion’s unique sense of place. Each place in this series is highlighted through pictures, words, video, or some other means.

Today our focus is on the landmark church building sitting proudly on Galion’s main street. With its two massive towers, decorative stonework , and imposing presence, First United Church of Christ is definitely a visual icon of our community. Dinosaurs Coming to Ohio This Summer

Well, not exactly, but almost.

During the winter, GalionLive typically takes a look at what’s heading to nearby Cedar Point for the upcoming amusement park season. Typically, it’s a high-speed coaster or other thrill ride, something the park is known for.

This year, however, the major new feature has nothing to do with tracks, turns, or turning upside down.

New at Cedar Point in 2012 is Dinosaurs Alive! on Adventure Island, a prehistoric-themed attracition featuring over 50 life-size anamatronic dinosaurs.

Adults and kids of all ages will experience the sights and sounds of prehistoric dinosaurs. Wihtin this collection of pre-historic beasts, are three interactive dinosaurs where guests can control the dinosaurs’ sounds or movement.

Food, Fun, and a Good Cause

Chili Day 2012 was a rousing success, according to the Galion Kiwanis.

As we shared two weeks ago, this popular event showcases both great food and an important cause. The Kiwanis give two, $1000 scholarships each year to deserving Galion High School seniors, and the net proceeds from Chili Day are all used for that purpose.

It is also combined with a home boys or girls basketball contest at GHS, which many Chili Dayers attend. Unfortunately, though giving a valiant effort, the GHS Girls lost to Ontario last night, 58-57.

In that time, we have been aggressively chronicling goings on in our city in both photo and video formats, and welcomed the work of others willing to share their creations with our readership. Paying More for Crawford County Travel

The arrival of the new year brought an expected but perhaps difficult change for those relying on the county’s public transportation system.

For the last 19 years, fares have remained constant for transportation offered by the Crawford County Council on Aging. In 1992, the Crawford County Commissioners selected the Council to be the designated non-profit organization to seek in obtain public transportation grants. At that time, the fares have remained constant, as follows:

50 cents per trip or passengers with a disability, aged 59 and younger, to travel anywhere in the county.
$1.00 per trip for nondisabled passengers, aged 59 and younger, to travel within a specific city or village.
$1.50 per trip for non disabled passengers, aged 59 and younger, to travel within the county.

Officially Haunted

Galionites know the stories of Brownella Cottage and the strange “goings on” that take place there. In 2011, the local landmark was the scene of both a national television episode and a new series of unique paranormal tours.

Now, the strong connection between the Galion Historical Society and the Mansfield & Richland County Convention & Visitors Bureau has resulted in Brownella become an official component of the bureau’s new compendium of haunted area sites. The “2012 Paranromal Investigation Sites for Haunted Mansfield Ohio” includes the following locations:

Ohioans can now use their smart phones to assist in job-hunting efforts.

The new OhioMeansJobs mobile phone application allows Ohioans to search, save and apply for jobs from their iPhone, iPad or Android device. The app combines unique data from the state of Ohio with advanced search tools and filter technology from Monster. Community Center YMCA Unveils New Website

The Galion Community Center YMCA, a local fixture formed in 1977 through merger of the former Galion YMCA and Galion Community Center, has moved into the digital age through the launch of their first full-featured website.

The site shares information and programming under three basic categories — Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. Each in term lays out a variety of Center YMCA initiatives, from its well-known child care programming, to the “Silversneakers” programs for area seniors.

Basic facility information is included as well, including a review of membership rates, a look at Center YMCA facilities, a look back at the institution’s history in the community, and basic contact details.

An Evening Walk Through Uptowne Galion

How long has it been since you have heard Galion described as “gorgeous?”

Some years ago, this collection of Galion photographs was posted on UrbanOhio, likely the busiest place online for discussion of Ohio cities, urban issues, architecture, and community development.

Entitled “An Evening Walk Through Uptowne Galion,” these images reflect our community on a single summer evening some years ago. Each is accompanied by a short narrative.

For anyone who might wonder how our community can seem to those from the outside, the unsolicited reader comments following the photos provide some food for thought.
