Five local high school seniors, three from Galion High School and two from Crestline High School, each received a $1,000 scholarship last night during an event held at the Galion Masonic Lodge.

After a welcoming dinner, members of Galion Masonic Lodge No. 414 invited guests to join them in the lodge’s main room for remarks and the receipt of scholarship checks from the Galion Lodge’s current Worshipful Master, Mike Swick.

After Swick shared opening remarks to begin the event, Chaplain Val Young presented an overview of Freemasonry, which he described as an organization dedicated to “…trying to make good men better men.” Young shared a bit of the history of Freemasonry and dispelled common myths. Galion Police joined with their counterparts in Bucyrus yesterday in assisting the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, as multiple containers of illegal bath salts were seized in Tiro.

In addition to the illegal substances, additional narcotics and cash were also recovered.

Taken into custody during the seizure was Surgit Singh of Marion, age 70, who has been charged with aggravated possession. Singh is the owner of the Tiro store where the items were found.

Ohio’s prohibition against bath salts and synthetic marijuana went into effect last October. Not to be confused with the type of product legitimately used for enhancing a bath, these substances can induce numerous adverse effects including increasing both blood pressure and heart rates, as well as inducing hallucinations and paranoid states.

Galion has been highlighted again on national television, this time as PBS NewsHour examined the perplexing question of why employers across the country claim that they cannot find quality workers, while job seekers continue to maintain that there are no positions to be found.

Last spring, the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer came to town on a quest to identify the differences between Crawford and Delaware Counties, two counties which were comparable demographically in 1960 but which have dramatically diverged in the intervening years. Paul Solman, Business and Economics Correspondent for PBS NewsHour, traveled the streets of Bucyrus and Galion to gain a sense of the local story, and conducted several interviews.

The resulting feature was watched by hundreds of Galionites and Crawford Countians with a mixture of reactions. Some … Read the rest

A thesaurus is needed when one writes about a good man who has passed away. Today is no exception. Describing the life of Dr. Bernard Mansfield, and the service he performed for the community he loved, seems difficult without looking for dozens of words that reflect the concepts of “genuine,” and “dedicated,” and “true,” and “selfless.”

Dr. Mansfield passed away this morning here in Galion. His health had been deteriorating for some time, and his family and friends have all known for months that the end was nearing. Still, in the last few weeks, the good doctor was able to experience a bit more of life than what had been expected at one point; he even traveled to the Virgin Islands to once more visit a place of relaxation and … Read the rest
