    Galion Board of Education Poised to Make Substantial Cuts

    The Board of Education for Galion City Schools is poised to make substantial personnel cuts for the District, all of which are scheduled for votes at next Tuesday’s meeting.

    Proposed cuts will impact both administrative levels and staff levels, including:

    • Eliminating the following positions: Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Federal Programs, Special Education Coordinator, and Director of Operations (actually through contract with MOESC)
    • Reducing the Building and Grounds Supervisor position to a half-time status.
    • A reduction in force for 12 teaching positions, with a net suspension of contracts for 9 individual teachers.
    • A reduction in force for an additional 7 teaching and other positions, with a net suspension of contracts for 6 employees.
    • Elimination of an educational assistant and administrative support staff position, with a net suspension of contracts for 2 employees.

    Galion Police Assist as Bath Salts Seized in Tiro

    Galion Police joined with their counterparts in Bucyrus yesterday in assisting the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, as multiple containers of illegal bath salts were seized in Tiro.

    In addition to the illegal substances, additional narcotics and cash were also recovered.

    Taken into custody during the seizure was Surgit Singh of Marion, age 70, who has been charged with aggravated possession. Singh is the owner of the Tiro store where the items were found.

    Ohio’s prohibition against bath salts and synthetic marijuana went into effect last October. Not to be confused with the type of product legitimately used for enhancing a bath, these substances can induce numerous adverse effects including increasing both blood pressure and heart rates, as well as inducing hallucinations and paranoid states.

    Galion Community Hospital Lab Accredited

    Galion Community Hospital’s Arterial Blood Gas Lab has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection. The GCH Lab is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide.

    “As a respiratory therapist for Avita Health System, I can say that we take pride in providing the best possible care for our patients and families,” comments Dave Nelson, RRT, Pulmonary Services Manager. “With our new arterial blood gas analyzer, we have patient results in less than five minutes.”

    According to Wikipedia, an arterial blood gas (ABG) is a blood test that is performed using blood from an artery. It involves puncturing an artery with a thin needle and syringe and drawing a small volume of blood. … Read the rest

    Thursday’s regular meeting of the Galion Board of Education included a number of reports and other discussions in addition to the recognition of teachers and other staff.

    Among items reviewed or discussed were the following:

    5TH GRADE PILOT PROGRAM – Larry Dawson, 5th Grade Teacher, shared some enthusiastic words with the Board concerning the recent 5th Grade Pilot for the District’s new One to One Computing Program. Dawson expressed thanks for the efforts of the District’s tech crew, which he credited with leading to the success of the program. As for the students, he shared that “…it has been really amazing to see how quick, how easy they have taken that on.” The children have shown great care with the equipment, Dawson said.
