As the head of food services for Galion City Schools Jacki Corona gave her Annual Report to the Galion Board of Education at Thursday’s meeting, it became clear very quickly that the pace of change is accelerating in feeding local school children. And, while meals are already quite different, in the near future they will likely bear little resemblance to what students’ parents ate during their own school careers.

Corona began her report by acquainting the Board with Senate Bill 210, which was adopted in 2010 and amended in 2011. SB 210 governs the sale of food and beverages outside of the lunch program – including a la carte items and vending. Those items must now meet set nutritional standards, which standards Galion Schools has already put into place.

Thursday evening’s regular monthly meeting of the Galion Board of Education was a rather calm step before the difficultly of possible administrative and staff reductions are considered based on the District’s precarious financial condition.

GalionLive will have coverage of the meeting in various installments over the coming days.

The meeting began with a set of recognitions, and ended with the resignation of a long-time member of the District Administrative team.

As the academic year winds to a close, the time was at hand to recognize retiring teachers. Each was presented with a plaque, and Superintendent Kathy Jenney asked each about their length of service. Those recognized included (together with years of service):

    • Stephen Cochrell, 19 years
    • Cathy Hallman, 6 years
    • Rosalinda Hedrick, 24 years
    • Linda Hoover, 37 years
    • Neil Jarvis,

    1to1

The Galion Board of Education heard from the experts at their Work Session last week.

Not experts from Columbus, mind you – these were Galion Middle School seventh grade students who publicly demonstrated the impact of the District’s pilot for the One to One Computing Program. And despite the fact that the initiative is only a month and a half old, the students showed that they had already mastered a great deal of the potential of their new MacBooks.

During the pilot phase, a laptop was given to each seventh grader in the system.

The three students were introduced by their Principal, Andy Johnson. Johnson reviewed the pilot program’s implementation for the Board, sharing that there have been weekly meetings to discuss progress that have revealed few issues – all … Read the rest

GMS Principal Andy Johnson talks to the Board during Thursday's Work Session

At its Work Session on Thursday evening, the Galion Board of Education made the first in what will likely be a series of difficult choices over the coming weeks and months. Facing a forecast that calls for increasing revenue shortfalls to skyrocket to some $10 million annually by 2016, the clear picture was given that it is anything but business as usual on Portland Way North.

In response, the Board is pivoting, regrouping, and preparing for reductions.

District Treasurer Linda Kidwell led off a review of the District’s financial condition by sharing a 16-slide five year forecast update. Stating at the outset that only the initial two years of projections are clear as the state budget numbers are not yet known, the slides began with a pie chart review … Read the rest
