    On Monday evening, Galion officially becomes the home of something brand-new and sure to please.

    The region’s newest softball league becomes a reality at 5:00 p.m., when the Eagles take on Flower Cart in the inaugural contest of the Galion Men’s Softball League.

    Nine teams, each with 11 to 13 members, will play a 12-week season at East Park with games taking place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The season will culminate in tournament play.

    Teams and coaches include the following:

    • Eagles – Bill Dapper
    • Varsity Grille – Lyle Chasse
    • Covert Manufacturing-Stage II — Justin Wolfe
    • D’s Auto – Jeremiah Howe
    • AA American Bail Bonds – Jordan Powell
    • Flower Cart – Colby Landin
    • Steer Clear D’J – Alex Petras
    • St. James Auto – Joe Hipsher
    • Uptowne Outfitters – Mike

    GHS Baseball, Softball Squads Face Tournament Action

    Tournament pairings have been announced for both the GHS Baseball and Softball teams, as the regular season winds down to a close.

    And both have their initial games this coming Saturday.

    The Division III Baseball Sectional begins this weekend at Bucyrus High School, with the following teams: Bucyrus, Carey, Galion, Wynford, Crestview, Upper Sandusky, and Ontario. For Galion’s part, they take on Upper Sandusky at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. The winner of that contest, in turn, will play the winner of the match between Wynford and Crestview.

    This particular Sectional includes the top-ranked baseball team in Ohio for Division III, that being the squad for the Ontario Warriors.

    Also beginning this weekend is the Division II Girls Softball Sectional taking place at Lexington High School. The Tigers play … Read the rest

    Galion Tigers’ 2012 Football Schedule Unveiled

    As it so happens, the 2012 schedule for the Galion Tigers will look remarkably similar to their 2011 slate — except in reverse — according to the website MaxPreps.

    The same schools are included, and in the same order. What is changed, however, is the location for every contest, with one exception. The game against Chippewa High School will again take place in Doylestown.

    This, in turn, means that the two games which the Tigers lost last year — both on the road against Mansfield Senior and Wynford — will be taking place in the much more friendly confines of Unckrich Stadium in Heise Park. With a seasoned team returning this fall, this suggests that things may be looking rather promising for GHS.

    Watkins Recruitment Continuing

    It’s the middle of the “off season,” by Galion High School’s Dareian Watkins continues to be mentioned on recruiting lists by area colleges and universities.

    Recently, a new school popped up on that list — West Virginia University. This past week, a major article was penned and published on Eer Sports, a blog covering the sports programs for the Mountaineers, and focusing specifically on Watkins.

    In the article, writer Chris Anderson states, “Breaking in with the varsity as a freshman slot receiver, Watkins was moved to quarterback last season where he led the Tigers to an 8-2 record. In ten games, the electric sophomore completed 71-of-104 passes for 1,254 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also rushing for another 559 yards and ten scores.
