As a Memorial Day weekend special, we thought we’d share with our readers a bit more about a famous military figure from American and Ohio history. The name is one which every Crawford Countian knows well. His life story, however, may not be so familiar.

We share observations on the life of Colonel Crawford as profiled in an address given by Judge James H. Anderson on May 6, 1896 in Upper Sandusky. Judge Anderson had been invited to speak on the subject by the Wyandot County Pioneer Association, and his discourse was given to a crowd of nearly 6,000 people on the banks of the Tymochtee River in Wyandot County – near where Crawford was burned at the stake.

Readers may not be aware that as a young man, Colonel … Read the rest

The GHS Gymnasium was filled to the brim on rather warm Friday evening as 125 members of the Galion High School Class of 2012 received their diplomas.

While a note of reality was struck by Superintendent Kathy Jenney, who shared an initial acknowledgement of the District’s present ominous financial situation, she stressed that the focus should be on the sense of achievement and accomplishment that events like graduation can bring.

The day’s keynote speaker was Lee Owens, currently head football coach at Ashland University, and formerly the coach of 1985 state champion Galion Tigers.

At first, Owens’ speech also recognized the precarious world we live in. On one hand, he noted, lie hope and opportunity for graduates; on the other, a world of uncertainty and risk. Against this backdrop, Owens … Read the rest

Unemployment rates fell across Ohio in April, according to figures released earlier this week by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. For Crawford County, the news was good, mixed with a tinge of ongoing reality about the county’s overall employment picture compared to the region.

In April, Crawford County had a 9.0 percent unemployment rate, down from 9.7% in March. This number can also be contrasted with the figure for April of 2011, which stood at 11.4 percent.

The downside of that number comes when neighboring counties are compared. To find a county with a higher rate than that of Crawford County, one would have to travel to Huron County on the north (with a 9.8% rate, the highest in northern Ohio), Jefferson County on the east (Steubenville), … Read the rest

The atmosphere was respectful but somber Tuesday night as the Galion Board of Education met in a special meeting and considered deep and dramatic operational cuts. Before the meeting had ended, the Board had eliminated some 24 administrative, teaching, and staff positions, and reduced another to a half-time status. The cuts made were exactly as shared in our post last Saturday (click here).

And, while two positions were lost through attrition and two more through retirement, there remained a large number of District employees who had lost their jobs. Some teachers may choose, if eligible, to “bump” those with less seniority that hold positions for which they qualify.

Setting the stage for the Board’s votes was the presentation of the final Five-Year Forecast by outgoing District Treasurer Linda … Read the rest

This past week, the long-planned website update for Galion City School took place.

As was reported earlier this year, the schools recently turned to eSchoolView, a Columbus company, to design and host a new District communications center. Founded in 2009, the company provides turn-key websites for over 200 schools across the Midwest.

Galion Schools’ new site, still accessible at: www.galionschools.org, provides much of the same information as its former website but arranged in a more intuitive fashion. Menu tabs provide quick access to resources for parents, students, and staff, including downloadable forms, links to important information, maps, and more. Each school in the system continues to maintain its own individual page with its own set of information and links.

At GHS, several organizations and groups now have their own … Read the rest
