Each place in this series is highlighted through pictures, words, video, or some other means.

Today our focus is on the landmark church building sitting proudly on Galion’s main street. With its two massive towers, decorative stonework , and imposing presence, First United Church of Christ is definitely a visual icon of our community. We’re pleased to present this overview of the history of the congregation and building, as shared by congregation member Mary Court…

In 1831, and for about a decade after, large numbers of immigrants came from Germany and Switzerland to the new village of Galion.

Yesterday, the Galion Fire Department received a call from the office of Senator Rob Portman, congratulating the department on receiving a FEMA equipment grant. This grant, applied for by Fire and Rescue Chief Phil Jackson, will provide both ventilated fire gear storage as well as other equipment which will eliminate all diesel exhaust fumes from the Municipal Building.

In a press release received this morning, Chief Jackson shared, “FEMA, as I do, recognized the inherent dangers of constant exposure to toxic fumes and carcinogens on our firefighters as well as all other city employees that work at the Municipal Building.”

During the winter, GalionLive typically takes a look at what’s heading to nearby Cedar Point for the upcoming amusement park season. Typically, it’s a high-speed coaster or other thrill ride, something the park is known for.

This year, however, the major new feature has nothing to do with tracks, turns, or turning upside down.

New at Cedar Point in 2012 is Dinosaurs Alive! on Adventure Island, a prehistoric-themed attracition featuring over 50 life-size anamatronic dinosaurs.

Adults and kids of all ages will experience the sights and sounds of prehistoric dinosaurs. Wihtin this collection of pre-historic beasts, are three interactive dinosaurs where guests can control the dinosaurs’ sounds or movement.

Guests will also discover a hands-on paleontological dig site where they can uncover dinosaur “artifacts” to … Read the rest

Chili Day 2012 was a rousing success, according to the Galion Kiwanis.

As we shared two weeks ago, this popular event showcases both great food and an important cause. The Kiwanis give two, $1000 scholarships each year to deserving Galion High School seniors, and the net proceeds from Chili Day are all used for that purpose.

It is also combined with a home boys or girls basketball contest at GHS, which many Chili Dayers attend. Unfortunately, though giving a valiant effort, the GHS Girls lost to Ontario last night, 58-57.

Chairman of Chili Day Galion Kiwanis, Lonnie Eagle, recently shared with GalionLive, “The weather usually is cold and snowy which adds to the event. Each year it gets bigger and is a fun community event. Wendy’s is hopping that evening … Read the rest

During the first ever State of the Vision meeting at Victory in Truth Ministries, 6 individuals were honored for their efforts in carrying out the Crawford: 20/20 Vision plan, which is a product of input from members of the Crawford County community. In that time, we have been aggressively chronicling goings on in our city in both photo and video formats, and welcomed the work of others willing to share their creations with our readership. As a result, we have collected a rather remarkable collection which represents snapshots into the history, culture and personality of Galion and its people. Many of these photos and videos can be found no where else.

At the prompting of one of our readers, we thought we’d take a moment and share just a glimpse of what that collection obtains – and where to access it freely and easily.

As Ohioans know, such seasons bring with them a spate of political advertisements.

Advertisements for political issues and candidates are important in a democracy. For races without debates, they are one of the few ways that candidates can get their names and positions before voters. And, because our country’s political system has always been based on a bedrock of an informed electorate, that communication is extremely important.

With this in mind, we wanted to share the following about political advertisements.

GalionLive is fiercely non-political. The site is based on maintaining a neutrality of opinion on anyone running for public office. At the same time, it is an open site for people to share opinions and … Read the rest
