    Patriotic Performance

    As the chorus members exited the bandstand after their performance of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on Saturday evening, former GHS Choral Director Herb Krichbaum quipped to those around him, “Next time I’ll remember to bring the air conditioner.”

    It was, as usual, an unusually warm evening as the Galion Community Band, assisted by the chorus, presented their 36th annual performance in conjunction with the Galion Independence Day Celebration at Heise Park. In addition to the outstanding variety of musical selections performed by the band, including Sousa marches, excerpts from “Mary Poppins,” and several patriotic selections, it was also an evening which included the honoring of several community members.     Independence Day Celebration Lineup

We’ve even thrown in some photos and video to get you in the mood!     The following events are all taking place in Galion on Saturday, July 2:

    10:00 a.m. to Noon — God’s Little Acre Farmers Market — First Presbyterian Church, South Market Street

    10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — Bringing Back the Past Car Show in Heise Park — Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.; $10 per entry; plaques, door prizes, 50/50 drawing, trophies presented at 2:00 p.m.; benfits the Galion Golden Age Center

    July 5 at Heise Park – Photo Essay

    july5Heise Park was bustling on Sunday, July 5 with a day-long series of events commemorating America’s 233rd birthday. At 4:00 p.m., a group of military and civilian reenactors established an encampment at the log cabin, demonstrating clothing, gear and cooking. At 7:00 p.m., music began at the Heise Park bandshell behind the Center-Y – with the Galion Alumni Band performing at 8:00 p.m.. The Alumni Band was joined by members of the current GHS Band, as well as visitors from other communities.

    Below are a number of photos from the day’s events, including some of the evening’s closing fireworks.
