    Northside Market is Off and Running

    The summer is here, friends.

    The Northside Farmers Market launched its 2012 selling season on Tuesday afternoon with a tempting selection of vegetables, baked goods, meats, and more.

    Frank Reece was this week’s gift basket winner. The basket included pie, jams, bagels, cookies, greens, fresh herbs, flowers, greeting cards, woodcrafts, maple syrup, spice mixes, lettuce, and more, all provided by the local vendors at Northside Farmers Market.

    The Northside Farmers Market will continue each Tuesday afternoon from now through October in the parking lot of the KFC on Portland Way North. For those coming from outside of Galion, the market is conveniently located just a half-mile south of US30 — take the 598 exit and go south.

    Tree Sale Underway

    The Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District is offering a variety of evergreens, hardwoods, shrubs, and fruit trees during their annual tree sale.

    The evergreen trees available include arborvitae, Colorado blue spruce, Norway spruce, and white pine. These species are being offered in packs of ten.

    Their hardwood tree selection includes black walnut and red oak. These trees are also available in packs of ten.

    The shrub choices include flowering dogwood, Nanking cherry and sergeant crabapple. These seedlings are in packets of five.

    New this year, they have added a fruit tree variety to their sale. Bartlett pear will be available in packets of five.

    The Very Best of Fall at This Week’s God’s Little Acre

    Better weather is in the forecast, and vendors and customers will want to take advantage of that this Saturday at God’s Little Acre Farmers’ Market, open 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 240 S. Market St., in Galion.

    Heritage Harvest Farm’s Corinne Gompf, of Galion, says that this warm-up is really going to help local growers. “These sunny, warm days are going to boost the remainder of our summer crop and help our fall vegetables grow. Growers still have some tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables associated with summer … and it’s October.     This Week at NorthSide

    The NorthSide Farmers’ Market will be open Oct. 4, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., at the Kentucky Fried Chicken on St. Rt. 598.

    Becky and John Witter, of Witter Produce, in Tiro, will be returning to the market this week. According to Becky, they will have red onions, some tomatoes, green bell peppers, jalapenos, “Yummy” peppers, Brussels Sprouts, grapes, kohlrabi and green beans. Pumpkins, gourds, winter squash, indian corn, broom corn and corn shawks will also be available at their booth. “We’ll also have ‘Red Delicious’ apples in quart containers and half pecks and wrapped straw bales,” adds Becky.

    David and Molly Ernst plan to return to NorthSide Farmers’ Market this week with tomatoes, garlic, pumpkins and gourds. Molly will have homemade fudge, while David will have his hand-hammered jewelry … Read the rest
