Despite the passage of resolutions opposing the change by county commissioners and city councils – including one passed by Galion City Council in May of 2011 (see our coverage here) – the US Postal Service announced on Thursday that it is proceeding with plans to close its mail processing center in Mansfield.

The move, opposed for both the prospect in increased time for mailing and the impact on local jobs, is part of a national plan to close approximately half of the Postal Service’s mail-sorting offices. In Mansfield, that includes some 115 current positions.

Mansfield is hardly alone in Ohio in facing this future. The postal sorting center in Dayton will also close, and some 432 jobs will be eliminated in the process.

Given the various reasons why visitors might choose to visit Galion, can the community develop an image and marketing campaign that will make it a regional and/or statewide destination and a location for investment which, in turn, will assist local businesses?

It’s an intriguing idea which has brought together a diverse group of business owners, non-profit professionals, representatives from the Galion Area Chamber of Commerce, GalionLive, and others interested in the community to form a new effort called Destination Galion.

And not only has creative brainstorming been involved in the meetings of Destination Galion, but concrete steps have been taken both to better promote Galion activities and also to create new events to highlight local … Read the rest

Galion has been highlighted again on national television, this time as PBS NewsHour examined the perplexing question of why employers across the country claim that they cannot find quality workers, while job seekers continue to maintain that there are no positions to be found.

Last spring, the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer came to town on a quest to identify the differences between Crawford and Delaware Counties, two counties which were comparable demographically in 1960 but which have dramatically diverged in the intervening years. Paul Solman, Business and Economics Correspondent for PBS NewsHour, traveled the streets of Bucyrus and Galion to gain a sense of the local story, and conducted several interviews.

The resulting feature was watched by hundreds of Galionites and Crawford Countians with a mixture of reactions. Some … Read the rest

It’s become as much a part of the local summer scene as picnics and Independence Day.

The Galion Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the continuation of their popular “Hot Dogs on the Square” event. During the summer months, a different Galion financial institution sponsors the opportunity for Galionites to come out to Park Square near the gazebo to enjoy free hot dogs for lunch.

Each of this year’s Hot Dogs on the Square event begins at 11:30 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m..

This year’s dates and sponsors include the following:

June 15 – sponsored by Firelands Federal Credit Union
August 17 – sponsored by First Federal Bank of Ohio
September 14 – sponsored by Galion Building & Loan Bank

The Chamber also extended a thank you to Coca-Cola, … Read the rest

This is the fourth in our series of posts on Tuesday’s meeting of Galion City Council.

The last three meetings of Galion City Council have featured a number of citizen comments and reactions from City Council members and administration officials concerning the ongoing Olentangy River clearing project. On Tuesday, the dialogue escalated to an entirely new level, with high tension, raised voices, and a banging gavel.

In the end, several in attendance left the meeting in protest.

The dialogue began with remarks shared by Galionite Charlie Clark during the citizen comments portion of the agenda. Remarking that he was a fan of trees, Clark asked if the “destroying of beauty” along the Olentangy was completed. He continued by reviewing the history of projects in that area in the last 30 … Read the rest

Three hours of meeting had generated serious discussion on a number of issues as well as consideration of nine separate pieces of legislation.
