It’s a week of firsts in Galion, which seems appropriate given the just-completed move to Daylight Savings time.

Weather-wise, we have the first predicted 70 degree high for 2012 forecast for this coming Thursday, as temperatures range from 20 to 35 degrees above normal for this time of year.

    Other firsts:

Yesterday, the congregation of First Lutheran Church celebrated this first-ever Chili Cook-Off. Twelve members and friends brought in roasters-full; all with that “secret ingredient” certain to tempt the judges’ palates — from potatoes to shell pasta. The winner was Galinonite Barry Blackford, whose entry was deliciously spicy.

Today, the entire seventh grade at Galion Middle School receives the first-ever distribution of brand-new laptops under the pilot stage of Galion City Schools’ new One-to-One computing program. Over 150 leased … Read the rest

At least two generations of Galion knew the phrase, “Save Dollars with Nicholls…. in…. Galion.” The man behind that saying and the business it advertised, Arthur “Art” Nicholls, passed away this Friday in Galion.

Art Nicholls started what would soon become Nicholls Furniture in 1947, initially selling appliances, televisions, washers, etc.. The store was then located in Uptowne Galion, in what is now known as the State Theatre Office Mall. Soon the business grew with the amazing local business growth of the 1950s and 1960s. As we shared in a story last year, “To meet the demands of a broader clientele for quality furnishings, a new store was erected in 1961 on Route 309 at the east edge of town. This now familiar landmark has quadrupled in size from its … Read the rest

    by  • March 8, 2012 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

On Wednesday afternoon, sunny skies streamed into the windows of a very unique place in Uptowne Galion. As he began, Galion’s very own haberdasher leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms, thinking back over the changes that have occurred in his store — and in Uptowne Galion — since Uptowne Outfitters opened in 2006.

“When we began, we had projections, but no one knew that 2008 would be that bad,” Brian Treisch shared with GalionLive, “and we really didn’t start to recover that level until this year.” He noted that this was an experience similar to those of other Uptowne Galion merchants.

This week, Treisch celebrated his store’s sixth anniversary of providing area residents with quality clothing and footware. During that time, Uptowne Outfitters has moved from its … Read the rest

Prior their Tuesday night meeting, the Planning, Zoning and Utilities Committee of Galion City Council met with three items on the agenda.

Committee Chair Dr. Thomas Fellner led off discussion on the status of legislation tabled in September which dealt with the locations for tattoo parlors under the City’s zoning code. At that time, a parlor was seeking to locate in the Uptowne area.

As explained by City Building Inspector Matt Ross, there is currently “no fit” under the present code for these operations, as they combine elements of retail, medical, light manufacturing, and some aspects of adult entertainment. As such, they do not fall into any existing zoning business classification. The tabled legislation would place tattoo parlors into the General Commercial class, but because of additional adult restrictions, … Read the rest
