The Crawford: 20/20 Vision Project recently held a combination planning and review session combined with an event to honor project participants. Media was not invited to the event, however this afternoon we received a press release detailing the individuals and groups recognized. This press release follows.

The tireless work that is needed to improve a community often goes unnoticed. On Monday, January 24, the Crawford: 20/20 Vision recognized community leaders for their efforts to move Crawford County forward in a positive direction.

During the first ever State of the Vision meeting at Victory in Truth Ministries, 6 individuals were honored for their efforts in carrying out the Crawford: 20/20 Vision plan, which is a product of input from members of the Crawford County community. County Unemployment Rate Drops Significantly

    by  • December 20, 2011 • News & Views • 0 Comments

Something is clearly happening with the local job market – either a substantially higher number of county residents are obtaining employment, or else a large number of given up efforts to find a job. Either way, Crawford County saw the largest percentage drop in its unemployment rate among north central Ohio counties in November according to figures released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

According to those statistics, the November local rate was at 9.9 percent, down 1.3 percent from the month before. This decrease mirrored those statewide (a .5 percent decrease) and nationally (down .4 percent).

ODJFS numbers note that service-providing industries saw a rise of 5,600 jobs from October. Other significant gains were in trade, transportation and utilities (3,500 jobs), government (1,500), financial … Read the rest

    CU Lead Makes Galion Stop

    by  • December 16, 2011 • News & Views • 0 Comments

The Parish Hall of Historic Grace Church was filled on Friday morning and afternoon with a contingent seeking to gain in leadership skills and community awareness.

The CU Lead project is aimed at creating new leaders through a combination of instruction, skills training, and exposure to ideas and environments. The effort is linked to the Crawford 20/20 Project, an initiative with the stated purpose of positioning Crawford County for success in the early 21st century. The group itself meets on the third Friday of each month, and this month included Galion to their list of class locations.

This morning, featured speakers included the heads of the two county Chambers of Commerce – Deb Pinion from Bucyrus, and Joe Kleinknecht of Galion. Both reviewed not only the operations of their respective … Read the rest

Revised from information posted by the Crawford Park District

The Park Commissioners have initiated the process to put a levy on the ballot in the March 6, 2012 Primary Election. The survival of current district staff and programs will depend upon the success of this upcoming choice for Crawford County voters.

The Park District’s major sources of income include Local Government Funds, fees (such as summer camp), and supporter donations. Local Government Funds were instituted by Ohio lawmakers in 1934 when they first passed a sales tax. Supporter donations are mainly from Friends memberships, the annual appeal, and memorials.

Local Government Funds, however, have been reduced as a means to balance the
shortfalls of the State budget. The projected allocation for calendar year 2012 is estimated to be 28.6% less … Read the rest

    Well, Not Exactly

    A GalionLive Editorial

In Saturday’s Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum, reporter Henry Conte opines on the Keller Hall transition house issue. In an op-ed entitled “Transition House Bungled in Galion“ (click title to read), Conte expresses the view that the Crawford County Commissioners share blame for the situation with Together We Hurt, Together We Heal, and also – paradoxically – the City of Galion.

When you compare Conte’s opinions to those shared last week in our editorial entitled “A Little Respect,” it is clear that we agree on much. We concur wholeheartedly that the Commissioners and TWHTWH could and should have done their homework where zoning was concerned. Both of those entities have largely admitted that was the case.

In laying out his argument for blaming the City of Galion, however, Conte … Read the rest

Keller Hall Lease Voided – Or is It?

    by  • October 7, 2011 • News & Views • 1 Comment

    citycounty

We agree with the writers in a post in today’s CrawfordCountyNow — it continues to be difficult to determine the status of the transitional house proposal for Keller Hall.

Yesterday, Bucyrus media reported that on Wednesday the Board of TWHTWH had voted 5-2 not to rescind the lease.

According to today’s story, however, two of the Crawford County Commissioners then met on Thursday and voted to rescind the agreement. Members of Together We Hurt, Together We Heal were not present for that meeting though invited.

Finally, in today’s Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum an article states that the lease has indeed been voided. The TF story shares a quote from the group’s attorney, but that quote is straight from the organization’s press release and no time frame is given for when it was … Read the rest
