Happy Birthday, Crawford County — Maybe

Yesterday, Crawford County celebrated its birthday — maybe.
On February 12, 1820, 192 years ago, the Ohio General Assembly enacted legislation forming Crawford County from what was then a much-bigger Delaware County. The boundaries of the county were quite different upon formation, however. A 4-mile strip on its eastern edge, an area which now includes both Galion and Crestline, was in Richland County, while all land “north of the Indian Reservation” was overseen by Seneca County.
And that’s the birthdate given the county by sources like Ohio History Central.
Even though Crawford County had been formed, it remained “under the jurisdiction” of Delaware County until 1823, when jurisdiction was assumed by Marion County. On January 31, 1826, it assumed control of its own destiny with its original 1820 borders.
