Also beginning tomorrow, the front entrance to the Library will be closed through the end of September – including the front book drop – as the main outside staircase receives some much-needed repairs.

Scenes from a Sunny Summer Saturday

    by  • August 6, 2011 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

The weather was muggy with hints of rain, but the precipitation graciously held off until later in the day. In the morning and early afternoon hours, the skies were clear enough to allow many local scheduled activities to take place.

GalionLive visited three of them today — first, the Lincoln Highway BUY-WAY sale at Poland Hardware in Uptowne Galion; second, the third monthly Community Yard Sale at the Historic Union Schoolyard; and third, a visit to the Galion Tiger Marching Band’s Car Wash/Bake Sale/Hot Dog Extravaganza in front of Discount Drug Mart on Portland Way North.

As has become typical, the Community Yard Sale in particular drew an eclectic crowd of vendors, potential purchasers, and people just stopped by to “chat.” Aspen Terrace had a table for the first time … Read the rest

Photo Essay – GHS Graduation 2009

    by  • June 6, 2009 • Life in Galion, Schools & Health • 0 Comments

ghsgrad1It seemed almost a shame to waste the incredible weather on the outside as the Galion High School Class of 2009 graduated this afternoon amidst the confines of the GHS Gymnasium. Surrounded by hundreds of parents, relatives and friends, those graduating ended their public school careers in a short, one hour and fifteen minute ceremony.

During the ceremony, Principal Fritz Caudle commented on the fact that the current class had received well over $200,000 in local scholarship monies, and over $900,000 in total scholarship monies.  Several students were honored for individual and group academic achievement.

After the event concluded, parents and friends sprawled out into the cafetorium and out onto the front lawn, where many families took photographs.

Below is a photo essay of Graduation Day 2009. Click on a … Read the rest

    by  • May 29, 2009 • Life in Galion, News & Views • 0 Comments

Mark your calendars now for June 17 – when you will see something quite rare come through the middle of Galion.  The following press release was recently received from the Ohio Lincoln Highway Historic Byway, describing the historic miliary convoy that will be heading across north central Ohio that day.

The Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA), with over 9,000 members globally, is creating a 90th year re-enactment of the US Army’s first transcontinental motor convoy across the U.S. This occurred in 1919 along the newly formed Lincoln Highway, partly to support the need for good roads, to test the various vehicles of the military in many different conditions, and also to honor the World War I veterans. This trip inspired one of the participants, then- Leutenant Col. Dwight Eisenhower, to later establish the … Read the rest
