Food, Fun, and a Good Cause

    by  • February 1, 2012 • Life in Galion, Schools & Health • 0 Comments

Chili Day 2012 was a rousing success, according to the Galion Kiwanis.

As we shared two weeks ago, this popular event showcases both great food and an important cause. The Kiwanis give two, $1000 scholarships each year to deserving Galion High School seniors, and the net proceeds from Chili Day are all used for that purpose.

It is also combined with a home boys or girls basketball contest at GHS, which many Chili Dayers attend. Unfortunately, though giving a valiant effort, the GHS Girls lost to Ontario last night, 58-57.

Chairman of Chili Day Galion Kiwanis, Lonnie Eagle, recently shared with GalionLive, “The weather usually is cold and snowy which adds to the event. Each year it gets bigger and is a fun community event. Wendy’s is hopping that evening … Read the rest

    An Option for Galion?

    by  • January 27, 2012 • Schools & Health, Sports • 1 Comment

This week has been a busy one in the continuing saga of the soon-to-be defunct North Central Conference — and it seems a good time to catch up with reports and rumors.

When last we posted on the subject, Upper Sandusky had voted to withdraw from the NCC in favor of joining the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference, a league composed of Marion, Morrow, Delaware, Knox, and Morrow County Schools. With the arrival of new members, this league will now be splitting into East and West Divisions. This decision by Upper left Galion, Ontario, and Lucas without a sports home starting with the 2014-2015 school year, as a three-team conference is not a viable scenario.

Fast forward to this week. According to unconfirmed reports, the athletic directors of seven schools within … Read the rest

    by  • January 20, 2012 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

The 13th Annual Chili Day, co-hosted by Galion Kiwanis and Wendy’s of Galion, will be here on Tuesday, January 31.

This perennially popular event showcases both great food and an important cause. All-you-can-eat amounts of Wendy’s chili will be available, and the $6.00 price includes a potato and drink as well. A small salad may be substituted. The Kiwanis give two, $1000 scholarships each year to deserving Galion High School seniors, and the net proceeds from Chili Day are all used for that purpose.

The event will run from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. that day.

As in years past, the event date coincides with a Galion Boys or Girls home basketball contest. This year, the Lady Tigers take on Ontario at 7:30 p.m. at the Galion High School Gymnasium.… Read the rest

Earlier this week, an announcement took place in Wyandot County which is sure to have ramifications for Galion City Schools.

According to the Daily Chief-Union, “Upper Sandusky High School has set its sights on the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference. “The high school will apply to membership to the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference for the 2014-15 school year,” Superintendent Michael Eaglowski said during Monday’s board of education meeting.” NOTE – the story excerpt can be accessed here for the time being. The blog Senior Reports is stating that a vote by MOAC principals will occur in February on Upper’s application as confirmed by the Athletic Director there (click here).

    Colleges Welcoming Watkins

    by  • December 30, 2011 • Schools & Health, Sports • 2 Comments

He’s not yet a high school junior, but that isn’t stopping a cadre of first-tier colleges and universities starting to think about adding Galion High School’s Dareian Watkins to their rosters.

At this point, recruitment opportunities are limited for schools, but can involve contact and on-site visits to learn about football programs, campuses, and academic options.

Several schools are in Watkins’ current scope including Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Oregon, Kent State, Pitt, and Ohio State. The latter has welcomed the young man for a campus visit, and bloggers and commenters have already begun to take notice.

On Wednesday, the OSU football blog “Eleven Warriors” published a piece entitled “A Look Ahead: Class of 2013” (click here to read). In comments to the story, one poster noted Ohio’s depth … Read the rest

    by  • December 24, 2011 • Life in Galion, Sports • 0 Comments

In contrast to the rampant tories of youth committing crimes this past week, we’re pleased to share pictures today of young people doing something very much the opposite.

At last week’s Galion-Lexington Boys Basketball game, a food drive and collection took place to benefit the Community Action Center food pantry. This past week, members of the Tiger Basketball team delivered the food and funds to the pantry to celebrate the holiday season.
