GalionLive, together with its predecessor site, has been a part of the Galion scene for over two and a half years. In that time, we have been aggressively chronicling goings on in our city in both photo and video formats, and welcomed the work of others willing to share their creations with our readership. As a result, we have collected a rather remarkable collection which represents snapshots into the history, culture and personality of Galion and its people. Many of these photos and videos can be found no where else.

At the prompting of one of our readers, we thought we’d take a moment and share just a glimpse of what that collection obtains – and where to access it freely and easily.

News media can fall into that same trap. The tendency is to gloss over milestones, and to forget that news reporters can also be news makers.

With that in mind, we wanted to share with you a mini-milestone we reached last night with the much-appreciated aid of several of our readers. Last night, we became the first entity in Galion — and perhaps all of Crawford County — to have 2,000 Facebook users “like” our page.

    On Media: Going Viral

    spike

On occasion, we like to step back a moment and let our readers go “under the hood” and discover how sites like GalionLive do what they do.

Today, we’re taking a look at viral posts.

Wikipedia defines “viral,” at least in the context of the Internet, as stories that become “…popular through the process of Internet sharing, typically through video sharing websites, social media and email.” In other words, it’s the online version of a story becoming popular.

This can happen in print media, but on a much smaller level. If a story is one which will draw a large number of readers, its reach will always be limited to the number of people who can possibly read the paper through subscription or newsstand purchase.

Online, however, there is no limit.… Read the rest
