    Media Matters: A Sobering Moment

    A GalionLive Editorial

The last 24 hours or so have been interesting ones here at GalionLive, and we thought we’d give you a bit of a glimpse into what we mean.

About 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, we posted a story about a same-day drug bust on South Street here in Galion. That information had been provided to GalionLive by the Galion Police Department, which does a great job of providing timely and important updates to area media.

Crime-related stories typically generate heavy traffic. This post, however, as it is said, went “viral,” causing our news site to strain a bit as twice as many visits occurred to GalionLive between 3:00 p.m. and midnight yesterday than any single 24-hour day in our entire history. MidOhioLive Making a Return

    by  • February 18, 2012 • News & Views • 1 Comment

The best things in life often take a bit of time.

Two weeks ago, MidOhioLive began a short break as it launched the process of moving from one platform to another. In addition to the main site and its companion community page, MidOhioLive sponsors the BucyrusLive, AshlandLive, and new ShelbyLive Facebook Pages. As … Read the rest

As recently as 10 years ago, newspapers owned a veritable monopoly on local news, particularly in smaller markets with no locally-based radio or television alternative. The reason was a simple one — news has always been very expensive to print and distribute on paper. With this arrangement came the ability to charge extraordinary prices for display advertising. Newspaper could always claim limited space as a pretext for charging whatever rates the market would bear.

    And they did.

The Internet has brought with it the largest paradigm shift in centuries in the … Read the rest

    What do Galionites Find Newsworthy?

    by  • February 7, 2012 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

One important thing regularly done here at GalionLive is to identify the types of posts that draw the attention of Galion news consumers. This observation helps us to be more responsive to the community we serve.

And because we have access to not only our own statistics but those of the Galion Inquirer — which has a running post view count on the front of their website — we’re in a really good position to make those observations.

Today, we thought that we’d share a few insights into the question of “What do Galionites find newsworthy and interesting?”

For starters, stories about local crime almost always draw readers in large numbers. Unfortunately, we have had a good number of those posts over the last several months. Each time one is … Read the rest
