As noted in our last post, Tuesday’s meeting of Galion City Council did not lack for substantive discussion topics. Over a two-hour period, in fact, some 11 items of proposed legislation were considered dealing with a wide range of issues.

Before the deliberative portion of the meeting, Galion Community Center-YMCA Director Terry Gribble gave Council a report on the 2011 season at the Heise Park swimming pool. The Center-YMCA manages operation of the pool pursuant to an agreement with the City of Galion, which in turn covers the difference between revenue and costs of operation.

Initially relaying that the hourly rate for services has remained constant for the last 5-6 years, Gribble shared some overall statistics to begin his presentation. Contracted labor costs this past year for 419 ½ … Read the rest

    Galion Places: The Olentangy River

As Buckeye sports fans know well, many of the sporting venues for The Ohio State University lie on the side of campus facing the Olentangy River. At that point in Columbus, the river has the appearance of a major waterway with major bridges crossing its width at strategic points. Once it reaches OSU, it has actually taken a roughly 90 mile meandering route through north central Ohio. The watershed for the river drains 543 square miles in Crawford, Richland, Morrow, Marion, Delaware, and Franklin Counties.

The starting point of the Olentangy River has been found in a field near Blooming Grove, where a natural spring combines with runoff in a natural depression. The word “Olentangy” is an Indian word meaning “River of Red Face Paint.” When the Ohio General Assembly … Read the rest

    Patriotic Performance

As the chorus members exited the bandstand after their performance of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on Saturday evening, former GHS Choral Director Herb Krichbaum quipped to those around him, “Next time I’ll remember to bring the air conditioner.”

It was, as usual, an unusually warm evening as the Galion Community Band, assisted by the chorus, presented their 36th annual performance in conjunction with the Galion Independence Day Celebration at Heise Park. In addition to the outstanding variety of musical selections performed by the band, including Sousa marches, excerpts from “Mary Poppins,” and several patriotic selections, it was also an evening which included the honoring of several community members. Among those recognized were three Rotarians – Don Ryan, represented on Saturday by his wife, Carol; and two long-time Rotarians, Jim … Read the rest

    Galion Places – Heise Park

Every few days throughout the remainder of the summer, GalionLive will take a look at a different “Galion Place” — those buildings, areas, and landscapes that collectively give our community its unique character. In some cases, we’ll be sharing history; in others, we may be sharing stories or photo essays. We hope that you enjoy this series.

The land on which Heise Park now sits was once owned by the Gill family, the descendants of early settler David Gill. Gill had come to the area in 1818, a year before the arrival of the “Father of Galion,” Asa Hosford. Gill holds the distinction of being the community’s first teacher, although he taught school for only two or three weeks.

The Gill family’s farm and land holdings comprised most of the … Read the rest

The month of July will be filled with opportunities for music lovers in Crawford County, as the Music in the Park series winds down in Galion, and the Crawford County Fair concerts “crank it up” in Bucyrus.

Two more concerts remain on the popular Music in the Park Series at the Heise Park bandstand, located behind the Galion Center YMCA. This coming Tuesday, July 5 brings the acoustic band “Loosely Strung,” followed the next Tuesday evening by “Gatlin,” a duo featuring Darryl Gatlin and Andrea Ison. Both concerts begin at 7:00 p.m., and lawn chairs are strongly recommended.

The Crawford County Fair features four concerts to go with its traditional fare of food, rides, animals, and fun. They include:
