From the 1870s to the early 1900s, an event occurred each year in Galion that truly brought the community together. Townsmen and women joined together with children, each taking a part in the production; politician and student stood side-by-side with ministers and mothers. And, as the final act brought the sorrowful death scene for young Johnny, there wasn’t a dry eye in house.

The event was Galion’s annual civic performance of “The Drummer Boy, or the Battlefield of Shiloh,” also known as “The Drummer Boy, or the Last Charge at Shiloh,” a play written in either 1868 or 1870 (depending … Read the rest

The Galion Historical Society has taken a step into the future with the launch of its own video page.

The Society unveiled its redesigned website some weeks ago, which continues to provide a consistently updated look at the organization, its properties, programming, and events. From information on renting Historic Grace Church for weddings and other functions, to narratives on the life of Bishop William Montgomery Brown, to a planned
”talk” page which will offer the opportunity to share stories and photos of the past, it’s a one-stop center for Galion history.

Earlier this month, the Society added a new feature – it’s own video page. The page resides on YouTube, the world’s largest online collection of videos, and is accessible either directly at: http://www.youtube.com/user/galionhistory, or by clicking on the … Read the rest

How about taking a trip back through time?

You may have heard of the Lincoln Highway, the nation’s first cross-country highway which stretched from New York to San Francisco, including – from 1915 to 1921 – through Galion. Or even of the National Road, the first improved highway in the United States which also ran through Ohio, which was completed in the early 1830s.

Did you know, however, that an even earlier public road was constructed in Ohio, and that … Read the rest

A thesaurus is needed when one writes about a good man who has passed away. Today is no exception. Describing the life of Dr. Bernard Mansfield, and the service he performed for the community he loved, seems difficult without looking for dozens of words that reflect the concepts of “genuine,” and “dedicated,” and “true,” and “selfless.”

Dr. Mansfield passed away this morning here in Galion. His health had been deteriorating for some time, and his family and friends have all known for months that the end was nearing. Still, in the last few weeks, the good doctor was able to experience a bit more of life than what had been expected at one point; he even traveled to the Virgin Islands to once more visit a place of relaxation and … Read the rest

This year’s event featured a “show and tell,” in which Society members shared stories about artifacts brought to the program from personal collections. Those included the following:

Dan Brown talked about the history of American rifles, including a look at the venerable Ithaca Gun Works. This important gun manufacturer, which was located in Ithaca, New York, home of Cornell University which Brown attended, has now moved to Upper Sandusky.

Mary Court shared stories relating to an ancestor, whose picture she shared with the membership. This woman’s family, despite living in Virginia, supported the Union at great cost – including the death of her father in the Union Army.

While you’re making your Mother’s Day plans, why not sketch in taking your Mother on a visit to a beautiful, classic Galion home?

For the first time in 2012, the landmark Gill House will be open to the public for tours on the afternoon of Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13. From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., visitors will be able to tour the house and listen to stories of local history, the remarkable family which built the house, and the unique architect that designed it.

It’s truly an American tale worthy of the History Channel – including ties to the venerable Chautauqua Institution in New York State and connections to the inventor Thomas A. Edison. The Gill House is also the only residential structure nationwide of noted architect Louis Kamper, … Read the rest

That’s Company with a capital “C” – referring to Colonel Crawford’s Company, an intrepid group of locals who regularly provide exhibitions of solider and family life in the time of the famed military leader for whom our county is named.

Ten costumed reenactors welcomed visitors to the Community Room of the Galion Public Library on Saturday afternoon. They sat at tables with intriguing displays of various aspects of late 18th century life – including firearms and ammunition, sewing and toys, furs and pelts, and more.

One reenactor carefully detailed the medicinal beliefs and practices of the time, explaining to a student about the belief in regulating “humors” through treatments such as leeches and blistering.

Things were a bit chilly at yesterday’s first-ever Fairview Cemetery History Walk, but that did not impact the spirits of actors or visitors as Galion’s final resting place opened its gates.

When the eight costumed actors arrived at the Cemetery office at 1:00 p.m., rain continued to fall in spurts, causing them to dart in and out of the heated, dry facility. Then, just as they made their way to their respective positions shortly before 2:00 p.m., the misty rain stopped – leaving only the 43 degree temperature and gusting, 20 mile per hour winds.

Over 125 guests braved the chill to listen to eight excerpts of local history, each shared by an individual representing a Galionite of the past. Groups traveled on a circular path through the main portion … Read the rest
