    Dr. Mansfield Scholarship Announced

    by  • February 9, 2012 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

Some communities have an unofficial town historian — a person who, through a commitment of time and talent, serves as a model for preserving a sense of the past and, by doing so, serving as a community’s conscience in the present.

Galion is truly fortunate to have such an individual, and his service is now being recognized in a way which will benefit future generations.

This morning, the Galion Historical Society announced the creation and availability of the new Dr. Bernard Mansfield Scholarship for Galion High School seniors. This scholarship will provide a $500 award annually to an eligible student chosen from those submitting applications. Included in the application is an essay encouraging students to consider the thoughts of a person from Galion’s past.

The Society announced on Tuesday that it is the Time Travelers Program’s newest member.

Begun by the Missouri History Museum in 1998, the network now joins together some 208 historic attractions in 41 states. At each venue, being a part of the Galion Historical Society will now automatically qualify members to receive a variety of benefits at these attractions, which can include free or reduced admission, discounts, and free parking.… Read the rest

An Evening Walk Through Uptowne Galion

    by  • January 22, 2012 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

How long has it been since you have heard Galion described as “gorgeous?”

Some years ago, this collection of Galion photographs was posted on UrbanOhio, likely the busiest place online for discussion of Ohio cities, urban issues, architecture, and community development.

Entitled “An Evening Walk Through Uptowne Galion,” these images reflect our community on a single summer evening some years ago. Each is accompanied by a short narrative.

For anyone who might wonder how our community can seem to those from the outside, the unsolicited reader comments following the photos provide some food for thought.
