    Library Computer Series Continues

    The Galion Public Library is rapidly developing a reputation for training in hands-on usage of modern technology, from mastering the art of digital photography to learning how to navigate the world of social media. This past Saturday, the Library featured a presentation on buying and selling on eBay, the world’s largest online auction site.

    These classes are facilitated by the Library’s new laptop training lab, which both provides participants with laptops and also allows an instructor to provide the class with a view of his or her own computer via a large projection screen.

    The series continues later this month with a “Hands-On Document Class.” The workshop is designed to provide practical instruction on the mechanics of digital document creation. As the Library’s website shares:

    The Future Arrives at the Galion Public Library

    The future is today at the Galion Public Library. Actually, it arrived at the end of November.

    The local library now offers its patrons the opportunity to rent “ebooks” through the Ohio eBook Project, a consortium of 80 libraries joining with the State Library of Ohio to offer ebook rentals. The project was actually begun in 2005, and since that time some 60,000 library patrons statewide have downloaded ebooks, audiobooks, music, and videos,

    Ebooks are downloadable in EPUP, Adobe PDF, and Mobipocket Reader formats, and can be accessed in one’s home, office – even at McDonalds!

    Each participating library commits to spending a specific amount on new ebooks each year, and these are then added to the consortium’s collection for all patrons to access. At present, several thousand titles are … Read the rest

    Seniors Surf Social Media

    A group of Galion area seniors could be seen surfing on North Market Street this morning.

    No, the Olentangy didn’t flood again. Instead, they were surfing the World Wide Web thanks to the Galion Public Library’s informative “Senior Workshop: Tackling Social Media.”

    GalionLive was happy to also be a part of the presentation.

    Valerie Waite, head of Publicity for the Galion Public Library, welcomed participants to the library’s new Laptop lab for the session. In the lab, each attendee has access to the internet via individual computer, while the speaker’s laptop screen is shown on a large projection in the front of the room.

    Tuesday Update

    Four brief items to share today:

    The Galion Public Library will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, August 17, as the staff receives training on e-books. Also beginning tomorrow, the front entrance to the Library will be closed through the end of September – including the front book drop – as the main outside staircase receives some much-needed repairs.

    Galion City Schools announced this morning on their Facebook Page that the District has received an “Excellent” rating for the first time on their Ohio Department of Education Report Card. The Department is releasing report cards to the public on August 24.
