    Galion Schools Updating Web Presence

    by  • January 9, 2012 • Schools & Health • 0 Comments

According to the website for eSchoolView, Galion Schools will be updating their online presence with a new website in the coming weeks.

In December, the company published a statement stating that Galion City Schools is working with the company to produce a new site, one which will not only have an updated design, but which will “…help the district highlight its efforts to keep alumni connected through an alumni component and showcase its community partnerships by connecting other organizations to the site.”

The information also shares that reliance on electronic newsletters and other emails will help reduce the District’s reliance on paper. As was noted in our recent story, the use of paper at the schools has captured the Board’s attention, and use of online tools is certainly consistent with … Read the rest

    Reading Galion on Google

    by  • November 19, 2011 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

One of the lesser-known parts of the massive search engine Google is Google Books, which according to Wikipedia Google has “…scanned, converted to text using optical character recognition, and stored in its digital database” some 15 million books. Books can be scanned at the rather amazing rate of 1,000 pages per hour; to date, it plans to complete all 130 million books in existence by the year 2020.

While books can be searched, only a portion of them can be accessed freely online. Nevertheless, those that do provide an amazing opportunity to delve into almost any subject.

Take, for instance, the subject of our own fair city. We thought that it might be interesting to explore what Galion-related information can be found on the site. Here, then, are just a … Read the rest

    Introducing Galion’s Own Social Network

    by  • November 18, 2011 • Life in Galion, News & Views • 0 Comments

Sometimes a good thing can actually get better. That’s our aim with the changes currently taking place on the former GalionLive Community site.

It’s actually the oldest surviving portion of the original GalionLive, coming online in 2008. The very first registered member other than the site creator was Rachel Mendell, now editor of the Galion Inquirer, who joined on October 13 of that year. Rachel was followed by 1,085 other registered users over the succeeding 37 months.

Although some aspects have changed, the site has remained relatively constant during that period as a location for posting and viewing comments, blog posts, photos, and videos. Some 4,523 photos are now accessible, as are over 115 videos. Photo albums and video uploads include a unique look at the last two-plus years in … Read the rest

Below is the newest “Social Media Revolution” video from Socialnomics, highlighting the ways in which social media is impacting all of our lives. Here is some information which shows the impact just in our corner of the world:

∙ There are 9,000 people on social media sites within 5 miles of zip code 44833. As of January 1, 2011, there were an estimated 5,457,740 Ohioans on Facebook alone – 47.28% of the state’s population. Each month, more Galion businesses and churches launch an online presence, including websites and/or social media.

∙ Daily print newspaper circulation has been in decline for over a decade. In 2005, the reported circulation of the Galion Inquirer was over 4,000. Now, it is less than 1,500.

∙ Each month, GalionLive sites receive between 150,000 and Read the rest

We thought that we’d share news with our readers about what’s happening this summer on MidOhioLive, GalionLive’s sister site, which covers Ashland, Crawford, and Richland Counties.

Throughout the summer, MidOhioLive has been adding to its list of features and pages, each designed to promote the site’s overall commitment to report news, share information, and build community across the three-county MidOhio area.

Here is a quick rundown of just a few of those updates; a more comprehensive guide to the sites will be developed after the current round of enhancements is completed – probably early this fall.

In the meantime, this is just some of what’s new this summer on MidOhioLive:

Several improvements have been made to the MidOhioLive Community Page, which can be easily accessed by clicking on the … Read the rest

    Did you miss us?

As you may know, our national server had issues last week, and we were required to re-boot our site. We re-directed the site to a temporary location over the last few days and continued to bring you the latest in Galion-area news and information. Instead of just re-launching the original site, however, we decided to take the opportunity to do something new, exciting, and completely “out of the box.” Welcome to the bright, new, and colorful version of GalionLive!

We will be re-posting the stories published in the interim over the next few days. And, to be sure, there will be some continued “tweaking” to get things just right. Our progress had reached the point, however, where we felt comfortable taking it out for a spin.… Read the rest
