    Crawford Unemployment Rate Remains Steady

    While it remains one of the highest in the area, Crawford County’s unemployment rate nevertheless remained unchanged from the previous month according to figures issued today by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

    Crawford County’s number was pegged at 12.5 percent for July, 2011, the identical figure for the month before. Interestingly, while many of Crawford’s neighboring counties registered similar level rates, two showed large increases in unemployment. Seneca County’s rate rose from 9.2 to 10.1 percent, whereas Huron County went from 11.6 to 12.7 percent to take over the position of the highest rate in north central Ohio.

    The statewide rate for July was also unchanged from June at 9.2 percent. Delaware County, however, lost its position of having the lowest number of registered unemployed in Ohio … Read the rest

    Going in the Wrong Direction

    When the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released unemployment numbers for May earlier this week, the news wasn’t exactly what Crawford Countians wanted to hear.

    It might have been something they expected, however.

    The rate for our county rose a full 0.4 percent in one month, registering at 11.8 percent of eligibile workers. This is the first increase in some 4 months locally, and was part of a trend across the state for more than half of Ohio’s 88 counties.

    Typically, Crawford and Huron Counties have the highest unemployment rates in north central Ohio. This month, however, Huron managed a somewhat more respectable 10.6 percent. Statewide, Crawford’s rate was tied for 9th highest, and it had the worst rate of any county outside of southern Ohio. Interestingly, it … Read the rest

    Economic Woes Continue

    The March Unemployment Rate figures for Ohio continue to paint a pessimistic picture for Galion and Crawford County. Figures released by the Office of Workforce Development indicate that Crawford County had a 15.0 percent unemployment rate for the month, tying Pike County in southern Ohio for the state’s 7th worst figure. Of the six counties with higher rates, contiguous Huron County had the highest rate at 17.5 percent. As much of the Huron County workforce is seasonal, this rate should decline somewhat in coming months. Click here for a larger version of the rate map.
