    Council Considers Brief Agenda

    by  • January 25, 2012 • News & Views • 0 Comments

There were a couple of new fixtures in place at Tuesday’s meeting of Galion City Council. For one, a new digital clock graced the Council table, and for another, a new sound system made for much better room acoustics (see photo).

And one of the briefest Galion Council meetings in months saw the consideration of three legislative items, as well as a handful of items mentioned by City Manager Gene Toy. Councilwoman Cathy George was absent and excused.

    Legislation included the following:

Council passed a First Reading of an ordinance expanding the Uptowne Design Review District to encompass the former Galion Middle School property, now known as the Historic Union Schoolyard. This expansion was an express request of the Galion Historical Society, owners of the property.

    by  • January 22, 2012 • Life in Galion • 0 Comments

How long has it been since you have heard Galion described as “gorgeous?”

Some years ago, this collection of Galion photographs was posted on UrbanOhio, likely the busiest place online for discussion of Ohio cities, urban issues, architecture, and community development.

Entitled “An Evening Walk Through Uptowne Galion,” these images reflect our community on a single summer evening some years ago. Each is accompanied by a short narrative.

For anyone who might wonder how our community can seem to those from the outside, the unsolicited reader comments following the photos provide some food for thought.

In December of 1879, Galion’s two newspapers featured the following items available in downtown stores:

∙ Collins & Wisterman — Holiday gifts and furs; muffle, boas, capes, fancy doormats. Also “ladies beaver cloth sacques.”
